The Shield

Cold, hard, tough, severe
That’s all they see,
Their eyes set upon me.

Stoic, strong, resilient, enduring
I can do everything,
Overcome anything,
Right ?
You wouldn’t say that
If you saw me at night.

Alone in my world
where no one can witness
The broken heart,
The desires never being blessed
Or even confessed
To any soul crossing my path.

The mask is all they can see,
The only thing they’re willing to see.
For who could be brave to try and discover
The untamed fire
And chaos beyond this hard exterior ?

Who could witness it without fear or scorn ?
Who would look without judgement or disdain,
When uncovering this amount of anger and pain ?
Could they still give me the respect and consideration
They claim to have for me ?
Or would they turn their back on what they’d finally see ?

There’s a reason for this cold armor.
No one could deal with what’s simmering under,
With what’s hiding
Behind the mask shielding
The dark and chaotic interior.

Maybe they assume I feel superior.
I think for them it’s even easier
Than admitting there’s a fragile being
Who under that shield is living
Or at the very least trying.

Cause it is for me a matter of surviving.
